This time next month we'll be on Explorer of the Seas enjoying our first day at sea.  It's been a long, long wait but I'm sure you will all be very impressed by this ship.  She's unlike anything we've ever done before on GothCruise and Bob and I can't wait to get back on her!

Some things to keep in mind as we move closer to the sail date:

  • The sail to and from Bermuda can be notoriously choppy. Much more so than sailing in the Caribbean, since we'll actually be in the Atlantic Ocean.  I highly recommend folks take precautions ahead of time by bringing seasickness medication, getting a bracelet, going to a doctor for a patch, etc.  I almost never get sea sick but I will still be bringing some ginger root and Bonine.
  • The cut-off to reserve shore excursions pre-sail is 10 days before we leave.  If you're wanting to participate in a ship-led excursion, now would be a good time.
  • If you haven't already, you can print out your Sign and Sail card online. This will make your embarkation much easier and get you on the ship (and drinking!) faster.  These electronic 'Edocs' replace the printed material you get in the mail.
  • While there is no limit to luggage you can bring on the ship, most airlines are being very strict about folks having luggage weighing over 50lbs.  They can - and will - charge you extra fees if any of your bags weigh over that limit.  It's better to split your luggage into 2 smaller bags than 1 large one.
  • Official boarding time is usually listed around 1-2pm.  Since Cape Liberty isn't very busy, many travelers are finding that they are actually able to board earlier.  I still wouldn't bother getting to the port much before 11am unless you enjoy standing in line and waiting around.  Once onboard you will not be able to go to your cabin (usually until 1pm) but the Windjammer will be open for lunch and the pools will be available.  If you're wanting to get in the water, pack a swimsuit in your carry-on.
  • Explorer of the Seas has a specialty (for fee) restaurant Portofinos.  If you're wanting to eat there, I recommend making your reservation when you first board the ship.  Bob and I will definitely be dining there 1 night of the cruise.  It's fantastic.
  • Last, but not least, our Meet and Greet is the day of sail from 5:15 to 6:15 in the Maharajah Lounge on Deck 5.  This will be right after the Muster Drill/set-sail party.  Please be prepared to head down there on time to pick up your laminates and t-shirts.  Our first dinner will immediately follow at 6:15 so dress accordingly.  The first night in the dining room is casual but no jeans or shorts should be worn.
